ROBERT MARTIN DESIGNS

Robert Martin Designs, Inc. (RMD), incorporated in 1997, designs and fabricates custom made high-end furniture. We feature a variety of sustainable woods with a focus on functionality in combination with a clean modern aesthetic. RMD's work is a collection of exquisitely pared-down tables, benches, desks and bookstands made from beautiful woods and often combined with either powder-coated steel or anodized aluminum. A number of our designs involve laminate-bent wood, a process used for outdoor, as well as indoor furniture.  This process involves taking thin strips of the chosen wood and adhering them together with boat builder’s glue. Pressed into molds, these swooping shapes become the curvilinear base of chairs and tables and do not need glued joints (what Robert Martin called “the Achilles heel of outdoor furniture”).

Robert Martin passed away in 2017 but his shop remains active.  Robert's original designs can be seen on these pages; those on the Floor Room Sale page are currently in stock as described.   Additionally, these designs, as well as those on the Gallery page, can be made to order with size and wood specifications that meet your individual needs and pricing determined accordingly.  Kai-wei Hsu who worked with Robert for 15 years, continues to manufacture Roberts' designs and has also gone on to form his own furniture design company (kwhfurniture.com).

We have had our workshop in the Brooklyn Navy Yard for more than 28 years and throughout this time have enjoyed its thriving and diverse community of artists, artisans and graphic artists. As landlords BNYDC has been responsive to our needs and concerns and we feel very fortunate to have space in a large, ever-growing industrial park that is community and environmentally oriented. A rare combination.
